Anand Bakshi, born Anand Prakash Bakshi in July 1930 in Rawalpindi (now in Pakistan), became one of the most beloved lyricists in Indian cinema. After the Partition of India, his family moved to India, and he later served in the Indian Army before pursuing a career in films. He arrived in Bombay in the 1950s with little more than determination and a passion for writing, and by the 1960s his songs had begun to reach audiences across the country.
Bakshi’s gift was his ability to express complex emotions in simple, memorable language. Working with legendary composers such as Laxmikant Pyarelal, R. D. Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, Anu Malik, and A. R. Rahman, he wrote thousands of songs that became part of everyday life in India. Classics such as “Mere Sapno Ki Rani,” “Dum Maro Dum,” “Chingari Koi Bhadke,” “Tere Mere Beech Mein,” “Tujhe Dekha To,” and “Humko Humise Chura Lo” continue to be sung across generations.
Associated with Saregama and Saregama India Ltd, his catalogue remains widely available today. Songs including “Tera Naam Liya,” “Bade Achhe Lagte Hain,” and “Chithi Na Koi Sandesh” continue to find new listeners, while remix versions of “Jumma Chumma” and “Saat Samundar Paar” show how his songwriting still inspires contemporary producers.
Over a career that began in 1957, Anand Bakshi wrote lyrics for more than 3,500 songs, received multiple Filmfare Awards, and became one of the defining voices of Hindi film music. He passed away on 30 March 2002 in Mumbai, but his songs remain deeply woven into the emotional and cultural life of Indian cinema.
